England international Ben Stokes made his debut for Newcastle CC this weekend, replacing injured Durham teammate Graham Clark, and played a major part in securing 30 points to take us back to the top of the North East Premier League Premier Division.

Stockton won the toss and elected to bat on a slow pitch. Some very disciplined bowling led by Ollie McGee (20 overs 5 maidens 39 runs 2 wickets) and supported by Callum Harding (3 for 58 ) and Jacques Du Toit (2 for 60) had Stockton dismissed for 205.

Rain interrupted our reply and we were restricted to 47 overs. After losing an early wicket, Ben Stokes joined Nick Hobson. Together they laid the foundation for our victory compiling a partnership of 91. Stokes was eventually caught on the boundary for 63 and Hobson soon followed for a well made 43. Jamie Carding then joined Jacques Du Toit and together they took us to victory.

Both continued with their fine form this season as Du Toit finished with 49 n.o. and Carding 40 n.o. in an unbeaten partnership of 86. They completed the victory after only 36.3 overs, taking 58 runs off the last 5 overs bowled.
