Earl Grey and MCC President-to-be: Anniversary Celebration 13 Sept
The final 125th Anniversary event will include a rare chance to see unique archive letters from 1897 – which secured the ground for cricket – and hear from MCC President-designate Mike Gatting.
The Anniversary Celebration Lunch takes place on Friday 13 September, from 12 noon. It’s followed at 2pm by a memorial tree planting to commemmorate Mike Randell, former Northumberland CCC committee member and inaugural chairman of Newcastle CC.
Tickets cost £5 – application form available here or email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0191 281 0746.
The event will include displays and the announcement of the first names to join a Roll of Honour to thank those who helped ensure we can enjoy the Jesmond Ground today.
Former Trustee Nicholas Craig will tell the story of more than two dozen letters which contain handwritten pledges of £500 each to buy the ground for posterity. They are from leading figures in the area including Earl Grey, and will be available to view for the first time.
BBC presenter Jeff Brown will present a video sharing more of the remarkable history of the ground, and there is a video message recorded by Mike Gatting. He’s pictured receiving the 125th Anniversary newsletter from Junior WASPS, and showing them pictures of his days playing at Jesmond.
