“Brilliant” – first Jesmond Fireworks Display

More than 2000 people attended a breathtaking display at the Jesmond Ground, with many more watching in surrounding streets and homes.

The initiative was achieved in less than two months thanks to community organisations, traders, council ward committees and sponsors Tesco, co-ordinated by Newcastle Cricket Club.

Roast chestnuts, mulled wine, facepainters and fire performers were all part of an evening’s entertainment leading up to the display. The countdown was lead by Metro Radio’s Clive Warren and BBC Tracy Beaker star Philip Scott, following entertainment by Radio Tyneside.

The verdict has been highly positive with messages of praise flooding in. Feedback forms were issued – the organisers welcome all suggestions for the future, and those received by 20 November will be entered for the prize draw to win tickets for Northern Stages’s two Christmas productions, a compost bin and a massage from Serenity Spa.

These superb pictures were sent by David Whinham (wide shots) and Terry Phillips (fire performance). If you have pictures to share with us, we’d love to see them! – please email secretary@newcastlecc.co.uk

Thanks go to the scores of volunteers who made the event possible, especially an army of litter pickers provided by students from Newcastle University. They left the cricket ground spotless!

A collection for the North East Children’s Hospice Grace House raised nearly £300 – many thanks for everyone’s generosity.
